RPD searching for Barela

The Roswell Police Criminal Investigation Division were summoned to [auth] the Emergency Room at Lovelace Regional Hospital, around 5:10 p.m. Monday, about a stabbing victim. Before officials arrived, they learned that the victim Gregory Alonzo, 45, was listed as “code blue.”

Officers who had gathered at Lovelace informed CID that the victim had been brought to the hospital in a pick up truck. The officers found a large amount of blood in the truck bed, along with a saturated bloody shirt.

The stabbing occurred in the 300 block of East Ballard Street. Investigation revealed that Johnny Barela, 48, was a suspect in the stabbing. Residents of the neighborhood heard Alonzo shout that he had been stabbed when the incident occurred. Alonzo said: “Get me to the hospital, I am dying.”

Barela’s last known address is in the 300 block of East Bonney Street. Police have obtained a warrant for Barela’s arrest. He is charged with one open count of murder and three counts of intimidation of a witness.

According the website New Mexico Court Case Lookup, Barela has been arrested in the past some 11 times for crimes such as aggravated battery and aggravated battery with grievous bodily harm, drug and trafficking charges, and failure to appear. Barela was released from prison about a month ago. He now qualifies as a habitual offender.

Police are actively searching for Barela and ask for public assistance. Barela is described as: 5 feet, 6 inches tall, weight 200 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Police consider Barela armed and dangerous. Officials urge people not to approach or make contact with him if they should see him. Call 911 instead.
