1 man dead after long standoff at NM apartment

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Authorities say a man is dead after a more than four-hour standoff at an Albuquerque apartment complex.

Albuquerque police officers went to the apartment in the far Northeast Heights on [auth] Tuesday morning after receiving information that a man who fired shots at officers Sunday night was there.

SWAT teams from New Mexico State Police, Albuquerque police and the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office shot numerous tear gas canisters into the apartment as two men refused orders to come outside.

The Albuquerque Journal says one of the men surrendered after authorities fired an initial volley of gas into the apartment.

Hours later, authorities say the second man exited the apartment holding a gun.

A State Police SWAT officer reportedly shot him and the man died at the scene.
