The Chaves County Sheriff’s Office released [auth] the names of the two victims who died in a fire last week as Raymond Steve Smith, 39, and his wife Sunny (Parker) Smith, 34. The fire occurred Wednesday morning at a residence in the 4900 block of South Pennsylvania Avenue.
CCSO’s Lt. Brit Snyder said that the Office of the Medical Investigator confirmed the identities of the people who were staying with the home’s owner, who was also injured when he discovered the fire and attempted to open a door getting caught in the back draft.
The preliminary findings and X-ray results revealed no evidence of foul play. “Both victims had high levels of carbon monoxide in their blood which usually indicates the deaths are the result of the fire,” said Snyder.
New Mexico State Fire Marshall has taken over the investigation of the fire. Supervisor Randall Arnold said that two men from the State offices had come down to Roswell to continue the investigation with the SO. “I can tell you that we did take samples and it is an ongoing investigation.”
Arnold said he did not know at this time what the test results were for the samples, and he declined to speculate about the possible cause of the fire while the case is under investigation.
