LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — Rev. Oscar Cantu is scheduled to be installed as bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Las Cruces.
Las Cruces Sun-News reports (http://bit.ly/VdOAIN) that the 46-year-old Houston-native will be installed Thursday and will become only the second bishop of the diocese. He is replacing Bishop Ricardo Ramírez, who retires after serving as bishop of the 46-parish and 45-mission diocese since October 1982.
Cantu says among his first goal is to get to know the priests of the diocese. He says he’s also concerned about the low number of priests and wants to push church vocations and education.
