LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) — Two brothers suspected of attacking a Las Cruces police officer investigating a possible domestic disturbance are in custody.

Police say 30-year-old Rafael Torrez and 26-year-old Israel Torrez are being held on [auth] suspicion of battery upon a peace officer, conspiracy to commit battery upon a peace officer, and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.

A police officer was dispatched to the intersection of Mesquite Street and Juniper Avenue last Sunday night where two people were reported to be throwing bottles at each other.

Soon after arriving, the officer spotted two men and noticed one was carrying a bottle in his hand.

One man fled and that led to a foot chase.

Authorities say one of the Torrez brothers punched the officer several times before more police arrived and made the arrests.
