ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A Bernalillo County sheriff deputy is recovering after being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic following a crash.

Sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Aaron Williamson says the deputy was hit around 9 [auth] p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Bridge and La Vega while deputies were investigating the unrelated crash.

The driver who hit the deputy, 22-year-old Damian Necochea, was arrested for aggravated battery on a police officer after being stopped a few blocks from the scene. He was being held Monday on a $15,000 cash bond.

The deputy was treated at an Albuquerque hospital and released. Williamson did not release the deputy’s name.

Williamson says shots were also fired at the time the deputy was hit, but it wasn’t immediately clear who fired the shots. Deputies continue to investigate.
