L[auth] aurell Stell, 50, was flown to a hospital in Lubbock after suffering two gunshot wounds Sunday. The incident, reported in Tuesday’s Police Blotter, occurred at a residence on Old Clovis Highway where Stell allegedly attempted to make unwanted sexual advances against a woman. The victim in her 20s declined his advances and a physical altercation ensued.

According to Chaves County Sheriff reports, the woman ran to another residence on the same property to get help. The 87-year-old man let her into his home and tried to block her pursuer. Stell burst through the door and second altercation began.

Lt. Daniel Ornelas said the man tried to intervene, but was overpowered by the stronger, younger man. The 87-year-old then brought out a firearm and shot Stell twice. When he arrived at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, RPD was called; but Stell refused to cooperate.

The investigation is continuing and the case is being reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office.
