NM panel shelves bill against enforcing gun laws

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A New Mexico House committee split along party lines as it shelved a bill to prohibit enforcement of federal gun laws in [auth] the state.

The Albuquerque Journal ( ) reports that the Consumer and Public Affairs Committee’s vote Tuesday to table the Republican-sponsored bill was 3-2, with Democrats voting against the bill and Republicans voting for it.

Republican Rep. Nora Espinoza of Roswell says her bill is intended to keep the federal government from infringing on Second Amendment rights.

Democrats said the bill is unconstitutional and presents numerous legal and practical problems with implementation.
