Funeral services have been set for Augusteen Elizabeth Cates, 96, of Roswell, who passed away Jan. 30, 2013. Services are scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at 11 a.m., at Anderson-Bethany Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Memorial Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, Feb. 4, 2013, at Anderson Bethany Funeral Home.
Augusteen was born Oct. 31, 1916, in Carson, Okla., to David Howell Howard and Jessie Lee (Allen) Howard. She was preceded in death by both parents, her father having passed before Augusteen was born.
Augusteen married William Louis Cates in Hughes County, Okla., on Jan. 24, 1932. William preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 1977.
Mrs. Cates was also preceded in death by daughter Monta Lois Green, of Roswell; son Cecil Curtis Cates, of Lemitar; and several brothers and sisters. She is survived by son Albert Lee Cates (Irene), of Charles Town, W.Va., son Julian Ray “Jay” Cates (Sarah), of San Tan Valley, Ariz.; daughter Ruby Eveline Hendrix (Alfed), of Roswell; and brothers, Owen Thompson of Elk City, Okla., and Wesley Thompson, of Coolidge, Ariz. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, 26 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Cates was proud of the fact that she was a member of the initial kitchen staff at Furr’s Cafeteria in Roswell, and retired from there in 1978 as kitchen supervisor. Prior to that, she and Mr. Cates were farmers, surviving the Great Depression by doing such jobs as cutting, shaping and stacking fence posts for $1 per day. They worked for several years at the Williams and Chesser Stock Farm, south of Roswell.
Mom’s only complaint about old age was the lack of others of her generation to talk with about old times. She touched many lives in her 96 years and will be sorely missed by all.
Pallbearers will be Larry Green, Garry Green, David Cates, Mike Cates, William Hendrix and Ken Cates.
Honorary pallbearers will be Alfred Hendrix, Alpha Green, Albert Cates, Cecil Cates and Julian “Jay” Cates.
