The Roswell Police Department arrested a Clovis man after he allegedly shot a homeless man, Sunday. The police responded to the emergency room at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, 405 W. Country Club Rd., Sunday, where the 26-year-old victim was being treated after having been shot in the back.
Officials were unable to speak with the victim while he was receiving treatment. However, the officers learned that the incident occurred in the 400 block of East Jefferson Street.
The investigator spoke with Daniel Lucero, 25, who said that he was in Roswell visiting a former girlfriend when the victim and one other man entered the home. The intruder reportedly told Lucero he had permission to be there. Lucero said the victim then attacked him, and the reports state that Lucero had several bruises and scratches when he spoke with officers.
The victim, meanwhile, began to walk to East Summit Street. He asked a man on the street to take him to the hospital. The samaritan picked up the victim up when he saw the other man staggering in the street and dropped him off at the hospital.
When officials obtained a search warrant for the Jefferson Street address, they located a .22 revolver inside the home. Lucero told the officers that the gun was not his. He denied shooting the victim and said he had been framed.
Lucero was arrested on charges of aggravated battery and taken to Chaves County Detention Center on a $75,000 cash-only bond.
