RIO RANCHO, N.M. (AP) — A retired New Mexico State Police officer and his son have been arrested in connection with the death of a Rio Rancho man.
Rio Rancho police say 56-year-old John McDowell and 36-year-old John McDowell were taken into custody after a lengthy SWAT situation that ended early Tuesday.
They say the SWAT situation was initiated because the elder McDowell has knowledge of police tactics.
Both men are being held on a $1 million cash-only bond in the July 2011 killing of 35-year-old James Chavez.
Police say McDowell and his son are being held on suspicion of an open count of murder, aggravated burglary and tampering with evidence.
They didn’t immediately say whether the two suspects had legal representation yet.
