New Mexico state parks offer free day for new year

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — The New Mexico State Parks system [auth] is offering free guided hikes at six sites for New Year’s Day.

The offer is part of America’s State Parks First Day Hikes occurring in all 50 states.

The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports ( ) park fees are being waived Tuesday at Bottomless Lakes, Cerrillos Hills, City of Rocks, Leasburg Dam, Rockhound and Sugarite Canyon.

State Parks Director Tommy Mutz says the effort is aimed at encouraging people to get outdoors, and also to help them burn holiday calories with a hike.
