Hopefuls file for area school board seats

Candidates filed to run for the upcoming school board elections Tuesday at the Chaves County Clerk’s office.

The election, scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 5, will affect the boards of Roswell Independent Schools, Hagerman Municipal Schools, Dexter Consolidated Schools and Lake Arthur Municipal Schools, as well as the Community College Board of Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell.

[auth] RISD incumbents Mackenzie Lee Hunt, Peggy S. Brewer and Eloy Ortega Jr. are running to retain the seats in Districts 1, 3 and 5. Challenging Brewer will be Jose G. Zavala.

For the Hagerman School Board, incumbents Chad Hamill and Wesley Pilley look to retain their positions. Pilley faces opposition from Chris Villa.

Incumbents of Dexter Consolidated School Board, Orlando Chavez and Daniel Lathrop, filed to run for Positions 4 and 5, respectively.

For the Lake Arthur School Board, incumbent Irma Guillen filed for Position 1, Gene A. Bassett for Position 2 and both Bradly K. Durham and Kenneth Hart filed for Position 5.

ENMU-R Community College Board incumbents Chad Hamill and Eloise A. Blake filed for Districts 2 and 3, respectively.

Also on the ballot will be a question of whether the RISD should continue to impose a property tax for the purpose of building, maintaining and improving public schools and purchasing transportation and computer hardware and software.
