Memorial rosary and Mass are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at 10 a.m., at St. Peter Catholic Church for Aminta Aguilar, 77, of Roswell, who passed away Dec. 1, 2012. Interment will follow at St. Peter Columbarium.
Reception will follow at the Ava Maria Center, 401 E. Bland.
Aminta Alvarez Aguilar was born Nov. 25, 1935, in Juarez, Mexico, to Esther Alvarez Portillo and Juan Alvarez Vidal. As a young girl she moved to El Paso, Texas, and attended El Paso High. Aminta has been a resident of Roswell 50 years. She worked for Chaves County Extension Office, Roswell Independent School District and held various positions for the state of New Mexico. The most rewarding was her work with New Mexico Rehabilitation Center, where she worked with disabled adults. She taught them to read and prepared them for the GED. In 1982, she received the Eliane McCray Award as Instructor of the Year. She was very active in the community and contributed her time to several organizations. Her passion was to help others, especially children and adults with disabilities. Her efforts were recognized by Gov. Bruce King, who asked her to sit on a special committee to pass a public law that would recognize and protect the rights of disabled and elderly. Aminta taught English as a second language and was fondly named “Mi Maestra.” She never turned away anyone who needed help. If she couldn’t help them, she would find someone who could. Aminta was loved and greatly respected. She will be missed by all who knew her.
