Former NM teacher avoids jail time in sex case

LAS VEGAS, N.M. (AP) — A former Robertson High School teacher who was accused of having a sexual relationship with a student has been sentenced to three years of probation.

The Las Vegas Optic reports ( that Jay [auth] Quintana will also have to register as a sex offender for 10 years, a punishment he fought vigorously to avoid.

Quintana had pleaded guilty in June to two counts of criminal sexual penetration by school personnel.

Quintana told the court during his emotional sentencing last week that he took full responsibility for his actions and there was no excuse for his behavior.

Before breaking down, he said he dishonored his family, his profession and his community and he apologized to his victim’s family.

The case became public in 2009 when a 20-year-old woman accused him of having a sexual relationship with her while she was student.
