SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Gov. Susana Martinez has named a Santa Fe personal injury and family law attorney as a judge in the 1st Judicial District.

Sylvia LaMar will fill a vacancy created when District [auth] Judge Michael Vigil retired in September.

Martinez announced her choice Friday after considering three candidates recommended by an Independent nominating commission. All were lawyers in Santa Fe.

LaMar operates a private practice and has more than 20 years’ experience in family law. She’s a graduate of Alfred University in New York and received her law degree from American University’s Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C.

Vigil made news when he won a $1 million prize in the multi-state Powerball game the day after he retired.

The 1st Judicial District covers Santa Fe, Rio Arriba and Los Alamos counties.
