NM man sentenced to prison in child sex abuse case

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A Mescalero man has been sentenced to 15 years in federal prison in New Mexico in a child sex abuse case.

Prosecutors say 59-year-old Manuel Coronado Cervantes was sentenced [auth] Monday by a U.S. District judge in Santa Fe.

He was ordered to comply with sex offender registration and notification requirements and also must serve 10 years of supervised release after his prison term.

Cervantes was arrested in December 2010 and has been in federal custody since then.

He pleaded guilty in March to a charge of abusive sexual contact of a child under the age of 12.

Authorities say Cervantes admitted that he knowingly engaged in sexual contact with a child in July 2008 in New Mexico’s Otero County.
