Funeral services will be held for John Hughs, 83, of Roswell, at 10 a.m., Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at Tabernacle Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Beaver officiating. Burial will follow in South Park Cemetery. John passed away on Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012. The body will lie in repose for viewing on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2012, from 12-8 p.m.
John was born Aug. 4, 1929, to T.K. “Karl” and Ruth Hughs in Manhattan, Kan. He was the only child but when he married Elsie Applegarth on June 1,1952, the Applegarth family accepted him as one of their own.
He received his bachelor’s degree in 1952 from Kansas State University. He worked for SPS as an electrical engineer for 35 years, serving in Plainview, Texas, from 1959-1981, and in Roswell from 1981 until his retirement in September 1994. John joined the United States Army and served in the Korean conflict from 1952-1954.
John was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where he and Elsie dedicated many years to serving the Lord as a Sunday school teacher for 2- and 3-year-olds.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Elsie of the family home; four children, Ruth Stein and her husband Paul, of Austin, Texas, Carol Harmel and her husband Mac, of Plainview, David Hughs, of Roswell, Richard Hughs, of Athens, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Allen Ward, Crystal George, Robin Cunningham and Nathan Ward; six great-great-grandchildren and one on the way.
He was preceded in death by his parents T.K. “Karl” and Ruth Hughs.
Pallbearers will be Doil McCreary, Gary Key, Gene Wolfe, Gary Witt, Tom Moody, Don Peterson, Joe Merlo and Mel Young.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Mission Fund at Tabernacle Baptist Church.
