SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Authorities say a Pinedale man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for raping a wheelchair-bound teenage girl in 2010.

A federal judge in Santa Fe sentenced 37-year-old Stanton [auth] Begay on Monday.

He was convicted in May after a four-day trial on kidnapping and aggravated sexual abuse charges.

Prosecutors say Begay will be on supervised release for five years after he completes his prison term and also will be required to register as a sex offender.

Authorities say Begay and a 15-year-old girl who’s paralyzed from the waist down were left alone at a residence in Prewitt on Dec. 12, 2010.

Begay was charged with sexually abusing the girl, who was later examined at a New Mexico hospital.

Authorities say DNA evidence linked Begay to the rape.
