PORTALES — Funeral services for Earl T. Busby, 91, of Portales, will be at 3 p.m., Monday, June 4, 2012, in the Wheeler Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Brad Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in Portales Cemetery with Johnny Welch, James Turner, Bill Welch, Jerry Hammond, Bill Merrick and John Wayne Elliott serving as pallbearers. All friends will be honorary pallbearers. The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Sunday, June 3, 2012, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Earl Travis Busby was born Nov. 26, 1920, in Mountainair, to the home of [auth] Jessie and Alvin M. Busby, and died early Friday morning, June 1, 2012.

When he was five years old, the family moved to Fairview, Texas, where he attended school. At age 13, he and his family moved to Portales. Earl worked in the fields in this area until he enlisted in the Army. During World War II, he fought in the European Theater, mainly in Germany. At the end of the war, he returned to Portales, and began working as a carpenter. In 1946, Earl began driving trucks, and drove until 1989.

He met his wife Velma Battenfield while driving a taxi between Cannon Air Force Base and Clovis. They were married on Aug. 12, 1944, in Clovis.

He and his wife grew a large garden every year. Earl enjoyed playing dominos at the Portales Senior Citizens, and had even won a trophy. For many years he was active in VFW Post 3299. Mr. Busby was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and Gary Modrall, of Portales, Sharron and Lynn Cox, of Roswell, Billie Kay and Thomas Hill, of Mesa, Ariz., and Kathy and Stanley Jones, of Acworth, Ga.; 11 grandchildren, McCabe (Sonja) Mayo, Tiffany (Jay) Dunlap, Andrew Cox, Melinda Cole, Randall Hill, Sharon (Scott) Weigand, Kristy (Matthew) Hughes, Shelly Bilberry, Cory Jones, Quinton (Crystal) Jones and Amanda Jones; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Milton, Clinton and I. D. Busby; two sisters, Pearl Elmore and Ruth Allison; and by his beloved wife Velma, who died in January 1989.
