CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) — Authorities say a man shot by a Clovis police officer had just raped a woman at gunpoint and later held a gun to an officer’s head.

Ninth Judicial District Attorney Matt [auth] Chandler said Friday that 23-year-old Paul Villanueva raped and threatened to kill an ex-girlfriend before fleeing the scene. Chandler said Villanueva then ran into Clovis Officer Kevin Littlejohn and pointed a .22 caliber pistol at his head.

But Chandler said Littlejohn was able to push Villanueva away and shoot him in the abdomen.

Villanueva is listed as critical but stable condition in a Lubbock hospital. He faces a number of charges, including rape and aggravated assault on a police officer.

It was unclear if he had an attorney.

Littlejohn is an administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.
