SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A union-financed political group critical of Gov. Susana Martinez is drawing fire from New Mexico’s Republican Party.
The GOP filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission contending that Independent Source PAC is violating federal law.
Independent Source Executive Director Michael Corwin said Friday the GOP allegations are frivolous.
Independent Source has issued reports and aired television ads criticizing the Republican governor. The GOP says the PAC’s financial disclosures falsely claim its spending supports President Barack Obama.
Corwin said Martinez is targeted “because she is in a position to impact the presidential election and we need to prevent that from happening.”
A GOP spokeswoman described the PAC’s defense as absurd.
The Communications Workers of America has contributed $190,000 to Independent Source since last year.
