PERTH, Australia (AP) — A major meeting of Commonwealth nation leaders has begun in Australia.
The biennial Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting began Friday in the Western Australia city of Perth with an opening ceremony that featured traditional Aboriginal dancing.
Leaders of the nations linked to Britain’s former empire are focusing this year’s summit on how their countries can better cope with challenges such as the fragile global economy and climate change.
Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the forum. The queen says the meeting promises to bring new vibrancy to the Commonwealth.
