Roswell was well represented Friday evening at the 2011 Eastern New Mexico State Fair Barnyard judging. The Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion of the competition were Roswell residents. David Brock and Mike Sweeny, co-owners of Country Club Groomers Ltd., both won Grand Champion for their joint pen which featured Brock’s Cochin cross cockerel and Sweeny’s frizzle cross pullet. Roswell resident Rikki Wagers won Reserve Grand Champion for his speckled Sussex hen.
Larry Hobson, president of this year’s ENMSF, judged the competition, which was an open show consisting of nonprofessional poultry, including waterfowl. The competition had 26 entries, and 12 different species were shown. Poultry were judged as backyard pets.
“It was a total, total surprise [to win],” Brock said. He has shown birds for years sporadically, but found this year to be the most enjoyable. Entering the competition for pure enjoyment, Brock said he and Sweeny also decided to compete to support the fair and barn.
