Roswell Literacy Council will hold tutor training for volunteers on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m. to noon.
Director Andrae England said that tutors do not need to fulfill specific requirements, beyond being at least 18 years old. “One of the questions we get asked most is if you have to be a teacher. No, you do not need to be certified.”
She said most people just love to read. She recommended that patience and flexibility is an asset. “We need to be sensitive to where the person is rather than where we think they should be.”
Most of the training can take place online.
“We have a packet. Many people have the packet before they take the tutor training,” she said.
The packet discusses how people learn. “Many debate the concept of learning styles, but everyone learns differently and people will start at different levels,” said England.
The packet also includes a section on lesson planning, although she quipped that lesson planning is ofttimes a myth. “When I was teaching, I’d submit a lesson plan and on Monday, it would be undone by my students,” she said.
This is where adaptability is a plus. England explained, “People may have a crisis. You may need to change the lesson. Often lesson plans need to be tossed to accommodate the needs of the learner.”
Next Saturday, members of Roswell Literacy Council will spend three hours, reviewing the basics. “We will also discuss who is waiting for a tutor, their age, their goals, the time allotment or the time they have available for lessons,” said England.
She feels it is important to get to know their student. The number of students vary, but she estimated that at least 10 people are waiting for a tutor.
England said there was no real deadline for signing up for the training program. “It would be nice to know before hand, but if they just want to come, they can come. We’ll throw on an extra pot of coffee.”
