Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at LaGr[auth] one Funeral Chapel for J.B. Phelps, 85, of Roswell, who passed away Sept. 5, 2011. The Rev. Melvin Suttle of First Assembly of God Church will officiate with interment to follow in South Park Cemetery
J.B. was born March 6, 1926, in Atoka, Okla., to James A. and Mary Phelps, who preceded him in death.
He was also preceded in death by one sister, Alean Forneris and brother-in-law Pete Forneris; and one brother Donald E. “Rusty” Phelps.
J.B. married Jo Marie Bridges on Aug. 2, 1947, in Sherman, Texas. She survives him at the family home.
J.B. is survived by one daughter Janice Stewart and her husband Doug, of Roswell; one son Steve H. Phelps and his wife Gloria, of Roswell; one sister, Stella Lou Folsom and husband James, of Tulsa, Okla.; and sister-in-law Sue Phelps, of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren, Dyan Bowman. Justin Bowman and his wife Danielle, of Ruidoso, Kristin Stewart and Eric Stewart, of Albuquerque, Teresa Barnett and husband Robert Barnett, of Ruidoso, Eric Ford and his wife Erin, of Aurora, Colo., and Aaron Ford and his wife Lyn, of Midland, Texas; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren,
He served in the United States Navy from 1944-1946. In 1959, J.B. and Jo Marie moved to Roswell, where he was employed by Dodson Wholesale Lumber Co. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church, and the American Quarter Horse Association. He was an avid horseman, spending a lot of his time doing what he loved.
