Naomi Neal was born in Grand Meadow, Minn., on Oct. 1, 1921. Her father, Ralph Neal, was a building contractor. Her mother, Margaret Fern Hartert Neal, was a homemaker. The family moved to Golden, Colo., in 1936.

She graduated from Golden High School in 1940. Naomi went to work for Remington Arms as an ammunition inspector to help with the war effort. During that time, she met John Robert “Jack” McMinn. He was from Red Lodge, Mont., and finished his higher education in 1942 at the Colorado School of Mines.

He entered the service and was appointed to the Officer Candidate School in Fort Belvoir, Va. Naomi and Jack were married in the Protestant Chapel on June 5, 1943.
