A 14-year-old Albuquerque girl died Monday and her father is in serious [auth] condition, after their pickup truck rolled over just north of Chaves County while traveling south to Midland, police said.

Amanda Brand died after she was ejected from the vehicle being driven by her 16-year-old brother, Tyler Brand, according to New Mexico State Police. The driver was listed in stable condition after being airlifted by medevac to Albuquerque, hospital officials said.

The children’s father, Scott Brand, 39, remained in critical but stable condition. Both Amanda and Scott Brand were transported to Eastern New Mexico Medical Center.

The driver, who was operating the vehicle with a learner’s permit, may have fallen asleep at the wheel, police said.

The vehicle came to rest on the median of Highway 285 North about a half mile before the Chaves County line. Police said it’s likely the pickup flipped over at least three times.

Emergency personnel responded to the accident shortly after noon and the northbound lane remained closed for about an hour.
