After nearly seven hours of judging, the Eastern New Mexico State Fair 2010 Rabbit Show could only have one grand champ on Monday.
However, the winner of this year’s show didn’t have a name.
“You think I’m going to name over 100 rabbits,†joked Zach Weber, who took home multiple trophies for his award-winning rabbits. “No way,†he said. Weber, 16, takes care of about 125 rabbits at his family’s home in Hobbs. His rabbits took awards for best in fancy, best in commercial and best in show.
“I like to stay very competitive with them,†he said. “I spend about five hours a day in my barn.†Weber is a member 4-H and says he started raising rabbits at the age of five. It’s a full-time hobby for him, aside from showing chickens and goats.
“This is my third best in show and my fourth reserve,†he said. Weber said raising the animals and showing them are his favorite parts of the whole process. “It keeps me busy,†he said.
