PORTALES — Funeral services for Jewel B. McGlothlin-Martin, 90, a longtime Portales resident, will be Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at 10 a.m., at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Steven Smith and the Rev. Brad Morgan officiating. Burial will be in the Portales Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Matt Foster, Jonathan Archuleta, Ben Foster, Smokey Ball, Andy Wall and Brian Arnold. Honorary pallbearers are her grandchildren, Michael Stoker, Heather Stoker, Tim Foster, Dana Martin and Ashleigh Martin. Jewel B. McGlothlin-Martin was born July 29, 1920, in Mosquero, the first child of Alfred Roy and Tabitha Alma McGlothlin, and died Sept. 28, 2010, in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. [auth] The family spent the early years of her life in the Roy/Mosquero area, where her grandfather owned and operated a country store.

She attended school in Mosquero, completing her high school education at Montezuma College near Las Vegas, N.M. She then attended ENMU in Portales, and earned her two-year secretarial degree. While working in Estancia, she met her husband, Billie Martin, who was a U.S. Army recruiter there. They married in Mora, on Oct. 2, 1941.

To this union five children were born: daughters, Sue and Stana; sons, David and Andy; and daughter, Krista. Jewel B. returned to Portales and finished her education specialist degree. She taught 6th grade for the Portales Public Schools for 24 years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for 45 years; she worked with the church bus ministry, and taught Sunday school. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a volunteer for the literacy program and for Meals on Wheels. She often hosted international students, especially those from China, in her home for Sunday lunch. She played piano for the Spanish Baptist Church for several years.

She was a rock hound and took a geology class at ENMU when she was over 70 years old. Jewel B. was an avid reader. In 2005, she moved to Roswell to be near her daughter, Krista, and sonin- law, Matt Foster. In 2009, she moved to Coeur D’Alene to be near her daughter, Sue. Jewel B. was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Alma; her brother, R.A. McGlothlin; her sister, Allie Jo Stephens; her son, Andy Martin; her daughter -inlaw, Debbie Martin; and her husband, Billie Martin. Jewel B. is survived by four children; a daughter -inlaw, Orlene Martin; sisterin- law, Wanda McGlothlin; a brother -in-law, Gerry Stephens; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
